Friday: 1800 outside Lurgan Police Station. This is for beginners and and ideal way to start learning to ride in groups. Plenty of experience will be on hand to offer advice

Saturday Morning Bun-run: 0900 outside Lurgan Police Station. Needs must, a relaxed run out to a coffee shop for a brew. At a steady bust brisk pace, remember to bring a few quid!

Sunday morning: 0930 outside Lurgan Police Station. This is the traditional Lurgan club run, all levels are welcome and can break off at any time.

See more info here.

I put together this little piece based on some of the advice Tommy Evans gave us last night regarding Time Trialling.

He recommended that when TT’ing we should ensure we have a tight fitting skin suit and a visor fitted to our TT helmets as in wind tunnel testing those 2 items were the most effective at reducing wind drag and making us more slippy.

SKIN SUITS

On the skin suits Tony McConville can get you those from our team kit supplier Endura, I’ll get the price and post it up. Failing that you can buy new ones on ebay from £40, you may want to spend a little more though. In case you don’t know skin suits tend not to have as big a chamois as your normal shorts as TT saddle have padding on the nose for when you’re sitting forward and generating all that power.

VISORS

As for the visor issue. If your helmet doesn’t come with a visor supplied, and it’s becoming apparent that they should, you can find a third party retro fit visor here

For small skid lids

and for Large noggins

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CYCLING-VISOR-GIRO-LAZER-LOUIS-GARNEAU-TIME-TRIAL-TT-CYCLE-HELMETS-LARGE-SIZE-/221000810255?pt=UK_Cycling_Clothing&var=&hash=item79174a5b95#ht_2346wt_1024

I’ll be purchasing one of these post haste as my Giro Advantage doesn’t have a visor and is more like a wind sock without one.

WARMING UP

Also based on what Tommy told us last night it was obvious few of us are warming up properly before a TT so I copied down the warm up Tommy recommended and here it is.

5 Minutes easy – 120+bpm

5 Minutes build up – 80% zone 2

5 Minutes build up – 90% zone 3 with 1 minute @ threshold. Include 1 -2 high cadence efforts of 10 -15 seconds

5 Minutes easy

As you know this doesn’t even begin to recount all the great information Tommy gave us last night, its just a couple of practicality’s we can all easily apply to our existing programmes.

All good advice I reckon. Good luck amigos and lets see those TT time tumble.

Well done to Paul McCormac, Desi O’Hagan and Robert Greer who showed well for Apollo on sunday at the Mid Ulster GP.

The course was a tough hilly one but nonetheless big Paul went to the front of the bunch and tried to pull back an early breakaway which unfortunatley for him managed to stay away and take all the points on the day, but he’s happy enough with his efforts.  the photos of him leading the bunch up the climb is evidence that he’s got legs at the minute and one to be watched. Desi O’Hagan managed to finished strongly in the bunch.

Meanwhile on the same course in the under 16 race Apollo’s Robert Greer finished 7th overall, a good result for the young man.  Robert’s is new to the race scene and is extremely keen to progress, he’s showing natural talent for the sport and we reckon he’ll be making a name for himself in the coming years.

Tommy Evans Q&A

Apr 242012

Apollo Cycling Team are hosting a talk and Q & A session with Tommy Evans in the Ashburn hotel Lurgan on Wednesday 23 April at 7pm – 9pm.

Tommy’s Palmares is an impressive one.  he has raced at the highest level on the road, track and TT.  Stage winner of the RAS and Irish international.  Upon retirement from racing Tommy then took up a post as Elite level coach with Cycling Ireland  and is currently Irish Triathons Elite cycling performance coach.

Tommy has been there and done pretty much most things in our sport.  don’t miss this unique oportunity to  pick the brains of one of Irish cyclings legends.

The event will be held in the upstairs bar of the Ashburn Hotel in Lurgan this Wednesday and we encourage you to consider a question for Tommy on anything o do with cycling, race tactics, diet, training, recovery etc.

Everybody is welcome, spread the word and see you Wednesday.
